I just added many dates under the assignments/important dates tab. The second trimester is quickly coming to an end, and as we move onto trimester three, there are many additional activities and opportunities that come up. I will continue to update the list of activities, dates and times as more information becomes available. This will be a great place to go to stay up to date on what is coming up.
This week we have a field trip on Wednesday. We will be attending the play, "Akeelah and the Bee" at Helgeson Learning Lab in Waite Park. The play is put on by Great Theatre. Students will need a cold lunch on this day as we will be eating early in our classroom. If your child signed up for a cold lunch from the school, you do not need to pack him or her a lunch.
Also this week, we will be creating a rocket to house our mini astronaut, Boomer. Students are encouraged to bring small items from home that may be able to be used to create our rocket ship. Boomer has been hanging out in our classroom during I Love to Read month and now needs his own ship. This will be the last week for students to take AR tests to move our paper rocket ship. Our rocket ship moves based on the number of words students read.
Students have been working hard to write a variety of poems. So far, students have written 5 different poems. This week, students will write a poem with 4 stanzas, as well as set up a Google Doc for creating their poetry books. Next week, students will work on their last poem for their book. The goal is to have all 7 poems written and typed by March 6. Once students have finished typing, the books will be printed and bound.
This upcoming week is also the week for students to recite the poem that they chose to memorize. Each student signed up for a day this week. Student were told to write their assigned day in their planner. There are 5 students scheduled for Monday.
There will be a new spelling word list this week in addition to poem work.
Students have a social studies test on Tuesday of this week, and on Thursday, students will be given an opinion writing assignment in social studies class. The opinion piece will have a social studies focus, but will also be a part of students' language grades.
In Science, students have begun their research on the biome of their choice. Once students have completed their research, they will be creating an online biome book. Ultimately, students will be presenting their project to second graders. The project is due March 4th.
We are continuing to work with fractions and decimals in math. This week, we will add finding percentages from fractions and decimals. Students have been working to memorize a set number of fractions and decimals, and I have been quizzing them at the beginning of class each day. They are catching on quite well!
In reading, we have been reading tall tales and learning about hyperbole (extreme exaggeration). Students have also worked to identify an author's point of view of various characters. Students will take their next reading test on Monday and Tuesday of this week. We will move back to nonfiction texts at the end of the week when we begin our next cycle.
The end of the trimester is March 6th, so students may need some help staying on top of their various work. Class time is being provided for all work and projects, except for the opinion writing assignment in social studies. That assignment will NOT be due before the end of the trimester.
Those are all of the updates I have for this week. Check out the important dates tab and calendar for an overview of upcoming activities.
Have a great week,
Nicole
