5th Grade Classroom Policies and Expectations
Discipline:
It is expected that your child will be respectful to all classmates, as well as all students and staff of Albany Elementary. Each child will be expected to be ready to learn each day, complete work on time, and follow all school and classroom rules. When these expectations are not met, consequences will be given.
Rotating Classes:
This year in fifth grade your child will have class with all three fifth grade teachers daily. Ms. Eibensteiner will be teaching science, Mr. Feldewerd will be teaching social studies, and Mrs. Snoberger will be teaching reading. These three class periods will be in the afternoon each day. Each student’s homeroom teacher will teach math and language arts.
Homework:
The amount of homework your child has from day to day will vary, and is part of your child’s fifth grade responsibilities. It is expected that your child arrive to class with their assignments complete the day they are due. A study hall is provided for students before school in the media center if needed. Students may also visit a 5th grade teacher before school if they have a specific question about their work. There will be a few at home projects throughout the year. They will all be explained at school and directions will be available on our websites under the appropriate subject heading.
Studying for tests is something students will need to do in fifth grade. This can be a difficult transition for some students. Students will be told in class what they need to study and test dates will be announced several days before a test is given. It will be your child’s responsibility to write the date of a test in their planner.
The use of the planner will help alleviate any questions about your child’s daily assignments. It will also be your child’s responsibility to ask you to sign his/her planner every night. If your child has worked on an assignment, and has a question regarding the assignment, please write a note on the assignment or in their planner. We will be happy to help him/her in the morning at school the next day.
Fidget Spinners: These toys will not be allowed during the school day.
Reteach:
We believe students need to be able to get outside regularly. Sometimes, however, students do need an opportunity to receive some extra help. Reteach will be used for students who need extra help or practice with a certain concept. At times, students may also need the opportunity to finish incomplete work during this time.
Monthly Activities:
Each month your child will have the opportunity to participate in a monthly activity. In order to be a part of this activity, your child may not have more than 3 late assignments during the month and must consistently maintain appropriate behaviors. If your child is not able to participate, he/she will spend the activity time being supervised in another area. Students with a combination of 4 or more late assignments or behavior issues will not participate in the monthly activity.
Water Bottles/Birthday Treats:
Your child may bring a water bottle if he/she chooses to do so. New this year, students may NOT bring any food to celebrate their birthdays. I will acknowledge each child's birthday or half birthday in other ways to celebrate.
Volunteering:
All parents will need a background check completed before working with students. This includes being a chaperone for any field trip. The district will cover the cost of the background check. It is a good idea to check with the office to see if you have one that has been completed and up to date.
We look forward to the year ahead!
