This is going to be a busy week as we end trimester 2 on Friday! Students have a variety of projects due and a chapter math test to take.
We will continue our math chapter on fractions, decimals, and percentages this week. Students will be using what they know about all three ways to represent fractional parts as they compare and order a variety of numbers. The next test will be on Friday.
In reading, we will continue our chapter on point of view as students read a story about Rosa Parks and do some vocabulary work.
One of the projects students need to have completed is their biome project. Presentations are due on Wednesday, and students will be presenting their projects to second graders on Thursday.
The second project due Friday is a poetry book. So far, students have written six poems. They will write one more this week called "100% Me". This poem fits in really well with our current math chapter. On Wednesday, students will create a circle graph using a compass and a percent circle. The circle graph is intended to correspond to the poem they write. It's always fun when two content areas overlap! In order to give students plenty of class time to finish up their poems and get them typed, there will NOT be any spelling this week. Students should be able to complete all of their poems in class if they are at school and use their time wisely.
As mentioned in my email, students are also working on an opinion paper for social studies. Students had last Thursday and Friday to work on the paper at school. Hopefully, students have all of their ideas selected and have begun to write their paper. The paper is due on Friday. I attached directions for the paper to my email in case you have questions. The main idea is for students to share their OWN opinions, and then offer support for their ideas.
Also this week, we will be visiting the middle school for a 6th grade transition meeting. Students will listen to a presentation given by the middle school counselor, and they will be able to ask questions they have about sixth grade. It might be a good idea to ask your child if they have any specific questions, or share any you may have so he or she can ask on Thursday. Later in May we will go back for a tour.
Spring pictures are coming up soon on March 18th. Every student will have his or her picture taken; however, you will decide if you want to order any pictures when the proofs come in at a later date.
The trimester ends on Friday, March 6th, and report cards for trimester two will come home March 19th.
I am looking forward to a great trimester three!
Have a great week,
Nicole
