Monday marks the start of a new trimester. It is difficult to believe that we are beginning the LAST trimester of the school year. The list of important dates for this last trimester is already quite long. I will continue to add and update details as I know them.
I was very pleased with how students did on our last math test. We will begin a new chapter this week on Tuesday. We will not have math on Monday, due to our end of month reward for February. This next math chapter will venture into the concept of Algebra. Students will learn about the "Order of Operations" on Wednesday. These are the universal rules for solving mathematical expressions consisting of multiple operations (adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing). We will end the week solving and writing various numerical expressions.
Students will be taking a reading test on point of view Monday and Tuesday of this week. We will move onto the next reading cycle on Wednesday. Our next focus will be on various text structures found in nonfiction texts. Authors often organize nonfiction using a variety of structures, like cause and effect, chronological order, problem and solution, among others. The goal is for students to be able to identify how different texts are organized.
In language this week, students will have a new spelling list. In addition to spelling, students will have some grammar lessons on skills I have noticed that are lacking. We will review the difference between plurals and possessives, as well as, how to write compound and complex sentences.
On Wednesday, students will be given three YAYA writing prompts (Young Authors, Young Artists). Students will pick one that they want to write about. All fifth grade students will need to pick one and write a story about it. This writing assignment will be due on March 19. Students will then be given the option to have their writing submitted for review by an impartial judge in the hopes of being selected to attend a Young Authors, Young Artists conference on May 13th. All students must answer one of the prompts and will earn a writing grade; however, students will have the choice of whether they want to be considered for the conference or not. Students will have class time on Wednesday to work. After that, students will need to complete their writing outside of class.
All trimester two grades need to be entered by the end of this week. Any work that has not been completed by Wednesday of this week will be entered into the grade book as a zero. Poetry books are due on Monday. Most students have already turned their poetry book in, but there are still some students hopefully finishing them up this weekend. You may want to check in with your child as to whether he or she has turned in his or her poetry book yet. Students can print the book at school.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Have a great week,
Nicole
